POLITICAL CAREER

Rep. Smith spent eight years on the South Lyon Community School Board (three as President), had a two-year term on the Washtenaw County Commission and served eight years in the Michigan Senate. While in the Senate, she was the Democratic vice-chair of the Appropriations Committee. Upon leaving the Senate, Rep. Smith accepted appointments to the boards of Planned Parenthood of Mid-Michigan, Michigan Campaign Finance Network, the Ecology Center and University Bank. She remains on the Student Advocacy Center board and is on the steering committee for the Detroit Community Development Credit Union.

WORK EXPERIENCE
Rep. Smith is currently forming a television production company to cover state government for commercial and public broadcast stations.

EDUCATION
Rep. Smith received her B.A. in Journalism from the University of Michigan and took advanced degree work in Journalism and Business Administration.

PERSONAL
Rep. Smith was born in 1941 in Columbia, South Carolina. She has three adult children: Conan, Dana and Tara.

CIVIC ACTIVITIES
Rep. Smith is also a member of the Library of Michigan Board of Trustees, the Legislative Black Caucus, the Legislative Arts Caucus, the NCSL Committee on Education and the NCSL Issues Committee on Children, Families and Health; and Vice Chair of Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee, a highly successful national organization dedicated to gaining Democratic control of state legislative chambers.
