POLITICAL CAREER
Speaker Cotter was first elected to the Michigan House in 2010 and is a former treasurer of Union Township. Following the 2014 general election the House Republican Caucus selected Cotter to serve as Speaker of the House for the 2015-2016 Legislative session. He beat out GOP colleauge Rep. Al Pscholka for the top seat.
WORK EXPERIENCE
Prior to his time in the House, Cotter was a lawyer focusing primarily in estate planning. Rep. Cotter also worked for Ryder Logistics before going to law school.

EDUCATION
Representative Cotter is a graduate of Shepherd High School and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Entrepreneurship and Business Administration, as well as a Master’s of Science in Administration, both from Central Michigan University. He also earned a Juris Doctorate degree from Thomas M. Cooley Law School.
PERSONAL
Representative Cotter and his wife, Jennifer, live in Mount Pleasant, where they attend Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
