A former president of the Flint City Council and a Flint school teacher who lost to former Rep. Lee Gonzales in the 2004 primary by a mere 137 votes. Rep. Ananich won out the 49th House District in the 2010 Democratic primary against three other Democratic candidates. In 2013, Ananich won the special election to replace Sen. John Gleason. In 2014 Sen. Ananich was selected by his Democratic colleagues to serve as Senate Minority Leader.
Senator Ananich served for four years on the Flint City Council, including one year as president. While on the city council, he voted to cut his own pay by 15 percent and refused to take any council perks.

Senator Ananich graduated from Flint Central High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in political economics from Michigan State University, as well as a secondary education certificate in social studies. He also earned a master’s degree in public administration from the University of Michigan-Flint.
Senator Ananich and his wife, Andrea, make their home in Flint, where they were both born and raised.
