Rep. Byrd was first elected to the House in 2014. He defeated seven other Democrats in the primary before defeating Republican Dolores Broderson 97-3 percent in the heavily Democratic 3rd House District. Rep. Byrd ran for the legislature in 1998, 2000 and 2006, finishing third in 2006.
Rep. Byrd worked as an accountant and tax auditor for the state of Michigan, as well as deputy comptroller for the city of Ecorse. He retired from the state after 28 years. In 2013, he was elected to the recently formed Detroit Police Commission. He is also a small-business owner.

Rep. Byrd has a bachelor's degree in accounting development from the Detroit College of Business.
Rep. Byrd lives in Detroit and is the proud father of one son, Phillip.
He is chairman of the board of the local Travelers Aid International. He is a trustee at his church, Pleasant Grove Baptist. He is a past district governor for Lions International, district 11-A1.
