Senator Santana was first elected to the Senate in 2018 after defeating three other Democrats in the August primary where she secured 41.52 percent of the vote.
She served one term in the Michigan House (2017-2018) where she succeeded her husband, Harvey Santana to win the right to represent the Michigan 9th House District.
In the House, then-Rep. Santana served on the Appropriations Committee and on the Appropriation's Subcommittees on Corrections, Health and Human Services, Licensing and Regulatory Affairs and Insurance and Financial Services.
Sen. Santana had worked for ProsperUS Detroit, an entrepreneurial training and small business lending program for Detroit residents, particularly those who are African-American, Arab-American, or Latino.
She also worked in the financial industry for more than 15 years. At a high level, she managed the health of a loan and funding portfolio. She worked to identify credit facilities and other sources of funding available to small businesses in efforts to achieve economic empowerment for local communities.

She graduated from Eastern Michigan University in 2007 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration.
She and her husband have three children.
Among her civic activities are creating and leading the neighborhood block club and serving as finance director and now president of the Warrendale Community Organization.
