Sen. Barrett was elected to the 24th Senate district in 2018 when he defeated Lansing businesswoman Kelly Rossman MCKINNEY by securing 53.53 percent of the vote in the general election.
Sen. Barrett served two terms in the Michigan House (2014 through 2018).
After graduating public high school, Barrett joined the U.S. Army and has continued his service for over 13 years. He is currently serving in the Michigan Army National Guard as a helicopter pilot trained on several different aircraft. He has served overseas in South Korea, Guantanamo Bay, Kuwait, and Iraq. Barrett is a veteran of both Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom and has been awarded multiple Army Commendation Medals, Army Achievement Medals and other decorations. He holds the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 2.
After returning home from Iraq, Barrett was hired as an analyst by the Michigan Department of Treasury and worked at the operations center in Dimondale.

Barrett graduated from Western Michigan University with honors, earning a bachelor’s degree.
Barrett resides in Potterville with his wife, Ashley. They welcomed their son, Patrick, to the family in 2013 and their daughter, Eleanora, in 2014.
Barrett served as the Michigan Treasury’s Good Government liaison to the governor’s office. He also served as the Treasurer’s designee on the Michigan Land Bank board, focusing on areas of blight elimination and land re-utilization. He also was the co-chairman of the Employee Recognition subcommittee for liaisons from different state departments which sought ways to recognize and appreciate fellow state employees for their accomplishments.
