POLITICAL CAREER
In December 2020, Rep. Markkanen was one of 15 Michigan lawmakers who signed onto a lawsuit brought by the state of Texas challenging Michigan's election results in hopes of overturning President-elect Joe BIDEN's victory.
He was first elected to the House on Nov. 6, 2018 when he defeated Democrat Ken SUMMERS by securing 50.8 percent of the vote.
Markkanen won out in a four-person August primary to secure the GOP nomination for the 110th when he won 29.1 percent of the vote.
It is, however, the second run for office. He ran unopposed for a state House seat in the 2016 primary, but his campaign ended in a general election defeat to Democrat Scott DIANDA. He earned 38.9 percent of the vote.
He served on the Hancock City Council as the Ward II representative.
WORK EXPERIENCE
Markkanen teaches high school history, civics and geography for Baraga Area Schools. He also has taught for Gogebic Community College.
EDUCATION
Markkanen graduated from Northern Michigan University and Michigan Technological University.
PERSONAL
He is married with two children.
CIVIC ACTIVITIES
Markkanenn works with the Hanka Homestead Board of Directors and as a volunteer tour guide, as well as with the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church Council.
