U.S. Rep. Fred UPTON, 66, a St. Joseph Republican, is serving his 18th term in Congress, having been first elected in 1986 by upsetting then-Rep. Mark SILJANDER as a first-time candidate. He's never lost an election, having defeated a few conservative primary challengers over the years. He considered running for the U.S. Senate in 2018.

Upton presently serves on the House Committee Energy and Commerce.

He previously worked for President Ronald REAGAN's Office of Management and Budget from 1981 to 1985 under budget director and former U.S. Rep. David STOCKMAN.

The dean of Michigan's congressional delegation, Upton formerly chaired the House Energy and Commerce Committee and is the uncle of model and actress Kate UPTON. Upton's grandfather of the same name, Frederick UPTON, co-founded the appliance manufacturer, Whirlpool.
