PREVIOUS OCCUPATION
U.S. Rep. Brenda LAWRENCE, 64, a Southfield Democrat, is a four-term congressional member who sits on the House Appropriations Committee. She is the 2nd vice chair of the Congressional Black Caucus and co-chair of the congressional caucuses on women's issues, foster youth and the skilled American workforce.
The former four-term Southfield mayor was first elected to public office in 1997 to the Southfield City Council. In 2010, she was the Democrats' lieutenant governor running mate to gubernatorial nominee Virg Bernero. In 2008, she ran for Oakland County executive. She edged out Rudy Hobbs by 2,391 votes in the 2014 primary to put her in position to first win the seat after being unsuccessful in her 2012 bid.
The married mother of two has one granddaughter.
