U.S. Sen. Gary PETERS, 60, a Bloomfield Hills Democrat, is a second term member of the U.S. Senate, having previously served three terms in the U.S. House. He serves as the ranking member on the Homeland Security & Governmental Affairs Committee.

The former Rochester Hills City Council member, state senator and Michigan Lottery commissioner ran briefly for governor in 2002 and lost a bid to become the state's attorney general by 5,200 votes. He managed branches for the Wall Street firms UBS/PaineWebber and Merrill Lynch prior to being elected to the state Senate.

Peters was a lieutenant commander and a Seabee Combat Warfare specialist in the U.S. Navy reserve, which included time in the Persian Gulf during Operation Southern Watch. He received his law degree from Wayne State University.
