PREVIOUS OCCUPATION
Democratic U.S. Sen. Debbie STABENOW was born in Gladwin, Michigan and raised in Clare. She was first elected to the United States Senate in 2000 by defeating then incumbent U.S. Sen. Spence ABRAHAM. She holds both a bachelor's and master's degree from Michigan State University. Her first elected position was with the Ingham County Board of Commissioners - a post she was elected to at age 24. She served in the Michigan House from 1979 to 1990 before being elected to the Michigan Senate and serving from 1991 to 1994.
She served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1996 to 2000 where she represented the state's 8th Congressional district. She was the first woman from Michigan to be elected to the U.S. Senate and is currently the ranking member of the U.S. Senate Agriculture Committee and is a member of the Senate Energy, Finance and Budget committees.

Stabenow was born in Gladwin, Michigan and lives in Lansing where she attends the Grace United Methodist Church. She has two grown children, Todd and Michelle, a daughter-in-law Sara, a son-in-law, Scott, and four grandchildren. She is also a life-long musician playing both the piano and guitar.
