Former State Representative (1979-1990)  and State Senator (1991-94).  Stabenow was elected to represent the 8th Congressional district of Michigan in 1996 where she served until elected the be the first Michigan woman to serve in the U.S. Senate in 2000.  She began her career by being elected to the Ingham County Commission at the age of 24 years old.

Stabenow was born in Gladwin, Michigan and lives in Lansing where she attends the Grace United Methodist Church. She has two grown children, Todd and Michelle, a daughter-in-law Sara, a son-in-law, Scott, and four grandchildren. She is also a life-long musician playing both the piano and guitar.
